Parking in Budapest

Like in most other European capital cities, parking can be challenging in Budapest as it is often hard to find a spot. Municipal parking is divided into different parking zones and street parking varies according to the area of the city. Budapest also has several parking garages conveniently located in the center of the city. If you are planning to drive in Budapest, here is some useful information about on-street parking, parking garages, park-and-rides and airport parking.

On-street Parking in Budapest

Generally, parking must be paid for between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm (except in Zone 1, see below) Monday to Friday. On-street parking (municipal parking) is free on the weekends. Budapest is divided into several street parking zones with different fees.

Castle Hill, Margaret Island and downtown Pest (roughly between Erzsébet Bridge and Chain Bridge) are restricted areas for cars. Most parts of downtown Pest (the area between the Danube and the Grand Boulevard) and the area surrounding Castle Hill (from Erzsébet Bridge to Margit Bridge on the Buda side) belong to Zone 1. The parking fee here is HUF 440 per hour and parking must be paid from 8 am to 8 pm on weekdays. In Zone 2, most parts of Buda and the area outside of the Grand Boulevard, the parking fee is HUF 265 per hour and it applies from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays. Other areas belong to Zone 3, where parking is HUF 175 per hour and it applies from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays.

Parking fees:

Zone 1 - HUF 440 /hour, weekdays 8 am to 8 pm, max. 3 hours
(The area between the Danube and the Grand Boulevard in Pest, and the area surrounding Castle Hill in Buda)

Zone 2 - HUF 265 /hour, weekdays 8 am to 6 pm, max. 3 hours
(Most parts of Buda and the area outside of the Grand Boulevard in Pest)

Zone 3 - HUF 175 /hour, weekdays 8 am to 6 pm, max. 3 hours
(All other parts of the city)

Tickets must be purchased from the nearest parking meter and they need to be displayed on the dashboard. Parking meters except cash (HUF) or credit cards. Meters that have "Mobile Parking" stickers accept payment by cell phone as well. Registration to pay by phone is via SMS (you text your license plate number to the phone number indicated on the sticker and you text 'stop' when you wish to finish parking). Be sure to check with your mobile provider in advance to find out whether they are part of the Mobile Parking program and if there is an extra fee for using the service.
