The foundation of the 700-year old Baroque-style building that houses the St. George Residence dates back to medieval times. The Fortuna building, named after the Goddess of Fortune, received its current late-classicist, baroque-style façade, as well as its name, sometimes towards the end of the 19th century. During its diverse history the building served many different purposes from an Inn and a coffee house catering to the rich and famous to the Royal Prosecutor's Office equipped with a prison. It also served as the Ministry of Finance, an apartment building and a museum.
The hotel's St. George Restaurant and Cafe, decorated with rare 18th century frescos, serves up Hungarian and international cuisine. There is a charming courtyard and patio, as well as an underground medieval wine cellar with a cigar room and a bar. The hotel greets guests with a welcome drink and a bottle of St. George's Wine in the room. Free tea, coffee, mineral water and pastries are offered in the afternoons.
Location and Things to Do
The Baroque-style St. George Residence is located in the heart of the Buda Castle district, adjacent to Trinity Square and Matthias Church. Buda Castle Hill, recognized as a World Heritage Site, has several famous attractions, including the Fishermen’s Bastion, the Royal Palace, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Labyrinth of Buda Castle just to name a few. The best way to discover this historic district is to take a walking tour. Getting to the city center or the nearest subway station from the St. George Residence is easy with Castle Hill buses 16, 16A and 116 (smaller, less pollution) or the Funicular. Bus 16 runs between Moszkva tér and Deák tér in the city center. Walking is another good option and it only takes 10-15 minutes to get to Chain Bridge or 10 minutes to Moszkva tér.
The Suites at the St. George Residence
Each of the 26 suites at the St. George Residence represents a piece of history. Every suite has a living room, bedroom, bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen and features free internet access (wired only). Rooms face either the quite street or the courtyard. Four different categories are available.
Bronze Suites (47-54 sq m or 506-581 sq ft) are for two adults.
Silver Suites (55-70 sq m or 592-753 sq ft) are for 2 adults and 2 kids.
Gold Suites (71-93 sq m or 764-1,000 sq ft) are for 2 adults and 3 kids and some are equipped with Jacuzzis.
Diamond Suites (94-110 sq m or 1,012-1,184 sq ft) come with Chippendale style furniture and a separate meeting room with faster internet access.
