"Das ist ein Unikum!"

Unicum, the Hungarian Aperitif

Zwack's famous Unicum

Unicum is a bitter, dark-colored liquor that can be consumed as an aperitif, or after a meal as a digestive. Jozsef Zwack, royal physician to the Habsburg Emperor, invented the drink almost two centuries ago. According to legend, the drink was initially presented to Kaiser Joseph II of Austria, who proclaimed "Das ist ein Unikum!" ("This is unique!"). For over 150 years, a blend of more than 40 herbs has been used to create this liqueur according to a secret formula closely protected by the Zwack family.
