Want to get into the holiday spirit? With most Christmas markets opening this week Budapest will be once again full of magical places to visit. Christmas lights and holiday decorations are popping up everywhere in the city. Here is a selection of Christmas markets and fairs to visit during the holiday season.
Budapest’s traditional Christmas market will be held in Vörösmarty tér. Visitors can browse over 100 stands offering Christmas decorations, foodie gifts and some authentic arts and crafts, certified by the 'House of Tradition'. Programs for kids, music and dance performances, traditional Hungarian foods like lángos and fried sausages will all be part of the experience. A glass of mulled wine or a shot of pálinka will also help you get into that merry spirit. Open: November 13 – January 6
From December to January the air around the Basilica will be filled with the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. This charming, traditional Christmas fair has an ice-rink surrounded by a number of small wooden huts selling Christmas presents, delicious food and hot drinks. Open: November 27 - January 2
Take a break from the high street and browse WAMP’s Christmas Design & Gastro Fair for unusual, artsy gifts. This December WAMP is popping up for three Sundays in Millenáris and it will feature stalls from over 50 local artists and crafters. WAMP also offers handicraft workshops for kids. Open: December 6, 13 and 20
The annual Christmas fair organized by the Museum of Applied Arts will feature clothes, accessories, jewelry, home décor, toys, Christmas decorations and much more by contemporary Hungarian artists and designers. Open: December 4, 5 and 6
In 2015, the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace will host once again its own christmas fair. The hotels' Zrínyi Passage will be transformed into a charming christmas market with little stands selling arts and crafts and culinary delights. Open: November 27 - December 25
The Advent in Budapest winter festival will offer a series of cultural programs for all ages in Városháza Park. A variety of shows and Christmas-themed performances are on the program. Open: November 28 - December 21
