The scoop on the best places for ice cream and gelato in Budapest

There’s nothing like a creamy, refreshing ice cream on a hot day - or pretty much any day. Here are some of the best ice cream parlors to check out in Budapest.

Gelarto Rosa

This nice little gelato place shapes each scoop into a rose, hence the name. They sell delicious hand-made Italian ice cream produced fresh on the premises every morning. The flavors are innovative: lemon basil, white chocolate and jasmine, strawberry-elderberry, and even chocolate chili. Lactose and gluten free options are also available as well as a wide assortment of macarons and handcrafted chocolates. Gelarto Rosa has a prime location near the Basilica, so it makes for a perfect pit-stop when touring the city.

Address: Szent István tér 3, Pest, District 5 - near the Basilica
Open: Monday - Sunday 11 am to 10 pm
Price of one scoop: between HUF 400 and HUF 600, depending on the size

This charming Italian ice cream parlor excels in creamy gelato. Flavors range from classically smooth chocolate and pistachio, one of the perennial favorites here, to more unusual tastes such as ginger, gorgonzola and chianti. Refreshing fruit ice creams come in a variety of flavors like grapefruit, mulberry and strawberry ('fragola' in Italian). Home-made with all-natural ingredients, without any artificial sweeteners or colors, Fragola is a must try. And it's not just ice creams, they serve delicious soups too. There are three locations in the city.

Address: Nagymező utca 7, Pest, District 6 - near Oktogon
The second location is in Buda at Csévi út 7, and there's a third one in Károly körút at Károly körút 3
Open: Monday - Thursday 11 am to 8 pm, Friday - Saturday 11 am to 9 pm
Price of one scoop: HUF 250

Pomo D'Oro

Another Italian gelateria not to be overlooked is Pomo D'Oro. Owned by renowned Italian restaurateur Gianni, the recipes here are created by gelato maestro Davide, also from Italy, known for his delicious patisserie. Pomo D'Oro rolls out classic flavors like hazelnut, strawberry, vanilla, yoghurt, caramel, coffee, lemon and more. The ice creams here are smooth and creamy, just like a proper Italian gelato should be. Portions are generous.

Address: Arany János utca 12, Pest, District 5
Open: Monday - Sunday 9 am to 7 pm
Price of one scoop: HUF 300

Come summer, one of Budapest's greatest coffee houses entices with the sweet smell of fresh-baked waffle cones. Gerbeaud's home-made cones are crispy and tasty, and their ice cream is made fresh daily using only the best ingredients, like Valrhona cocoa, Ceylon cinnamon and Bourbon vanilla. Treat yourself to one of their classic flavors like dark chocolate or creamy walnut. If you have time, enjoy an ice cream sundae on the patio or order one of Gerbeaud's tasty creations like Strawnilla, strawberry tart and strawberry macaron with vanilla and strawberry ice cream, or Esterházy, their famous Esterházy cake topped vanilla and walnut ice cream.

Address: Vörösmarty tér 7-8, Pest, District 5
Open: Monday - Sunday 9 am to 9 pm
Price of one scoop: HUF 300

Artigiana Gelati

This authentic Italian gelato place, tucked away in Buda, offers creamy, hand crafted flavors made with fresh seasonal fruits. Their pear and lemon ice cream is irresistible. Artigiana boasts 27 different flavors, including some lactose free and vegan options. There are a few tables, but for an even better spot to enjoy your gelato head over to Városmajor, a large green park just across the street.

Address: Csaba utca 8, Buda, District 12 - near Széll Kálmán tér
Open: Tuesday - Friday 10:30 am to 7:30 pm, Saturday & Sunday 10:30 am to 8:30 pm
Price of one scoop: HUF 220

Daubner Cukrászda

With queues often stretching to the street, Daubner remains a locals' favorite. Home-made ice cream is prepared here daily, using old family recipes. The dozen or so flavors on offer are a smooth and refreshing treat anytime of the day. Try the creamy almond, the strawberry yoghurt, the chestnut-puree or the apricot and you'll understand why locals flock to Daubner, despite its location outside the city center.

Address: Szépvölgyi út 50, Buda, District 2
Open: Monday - Sunday 9 am to 7 pm
Price of one scoop: HUF 200

Vári Cukrászda

Vári is one of Budapest’s best-kept secrets. Visiting this family-run ice cream shop located on the outskirts of the city may be a day trip, but this place always manages to tickle the local taste-buds. Some say it's the best ice cream in town, and it certainly has the best and most unique selection. With over 60 flavors to choose from, ice creams here go far beyond your standard flavors like chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry. Ginger-rhubarb, beets, poppyseed-cherry, plum brandy and Tokaji with raisins are just some of the delights not found anywhere else. Several of Vári's artisan ice cream flavors have won prestigious ice-cream competitions. Who knew there were ice cream competitions?

Address: Szlovák utca 82, Pest, District 16

I recently discovered Gelarto Rosa and loved it!  The flavors are so inventive and sculpting the cone into a rose makes it almost too pretty to eat!  Notice I used the word “almost”.  smile
