Downtown Budapest is reborn from Kálvin tér to Szabadság tér
Budapest’s ‘Mainstreet’ (a Belváros Főutcája), completed in 2010, is several interconnecting streets along a 1.7-km stretch of downtown Pest from Kálvin tér to Szabadság tér.
This area, including Kecskeméti utca, Egyetem tér, Károlyi Mihály utca, Petőfi Sándor utca, Bécsi utca, Erzsébet tér and Október 6 utca, was the historic center of Pest.
With significantly reduced traffic, pedestrians can once again enjoy Budapest’s downtown core.
The new design incorporates historic and modern elements and uses environmentally friendly technology, like LED street lighting.
The inviting streets and big open squares allow residents and visitors to walk, people watch, window shop or simply enjoy an espresso at one of the lively outdoor cafes.
A sunny, spring day is a perfect time to take a stroll along Budapest’s Mainstreet.
